Yakima Man Attempts To Make His Dream A Reality And Dog Sled Through Norway

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA.- You may think it's cold and snowy here in Yakima, but imagine if you were traveling through a frozen landscape, on a dog sled, for months. It may not be for everyone, but as we found out it's one local man's dream.

Josh Gilgen and his trusty companion, Willow, are trying to make their dream a reality, trekking through Norway and Sweden on a dog sled.

"If I get to go to Sweden and Norway they'll actually train us, so when we go out there they provide the equipment and we compete in a 200 mile trek," Gilgen said.

Josh, a physician's assistant here in Yakima, went up against hundreds of applicants from 24 different countries, but him and Willow are closing in on the chance to be one of two American teams asked to train with a team of huskies.

"It was a long shot, but that's really part of my story, you never know until you try," Gilgen said.

While this may not seem like an ordinary dream, Josh told us he's envisioned himself as a musher since he was a child, "This has been something, ever since I was a little boy, I grew up in Idaho so I was close to the mountains, and I've just always had a passion for the outdoors."

Josh is currently ranked 4th nationwide in the competition and he's hoping to find more support from the community. He believes if given this opportunity he can make a positive impact, helping to teach kids to always follow their dreams.

"If there is something you've always wanted to do you should go after it, and I'm trying to use this as an example to the youth here that I work with and in the surrounding areas," Gilgen said.
