Deputy Cleared in Kennewick Officer Involved Shooting

KENNEWICK, WA - The Benton County Prosecutor's Office said a an officer involved shooting that injured a man back in July in Kennewick was Justified.

A report released Wednesday December 9th said veteran deputy, Scott Surplus, shot and wounded 56-year-old Robert Bevel after police responded to his home on West 26th Avenue for an abuse call.

Investigators say Bevel dislocated his son's shoulder and assaulted his wife.

Officers surrounded the home, when bevel came out carrying a gun and refused to listen to commands to drop the weapon deputy Surplus fired at him, hitting him in the shoulder.

The Tri-City Special Investigations Unit report also shows Bevel had been drinking that day and he had a blood alcohol level of .206 along with other drugs in his system.

Bevel was charged with assault and domestic violence.
