White Pass Remains Closed and WSDOT Says They're Unsure When it Will Reopen

Posted: Updated:

WHITE PASS, WA.- Our roads here in Yakima are dry and clear of snow, but it's a different story up at White Pass. They're dealing with the aftermath of three different mudslides, that have closed down access over the pass.

"We have three major areas of concern we are walking on right now, we have one major wash out on the East side of the pass and then two on the West side of the pass," WSDOT Supervising Manager Brian White told us.

Over the weekend the Department of Transportation had contractors up on the pass assessing the damage. They're hoping to start working on repairs soon, but the weather could slow them down.

"You just don't know how that winter weather is going to stack up, is it snow, or is it going to be snow and rain on top of that and we'll have more water and run off to deal with, you just don't know, it's unpredictable with the winter weather," White said.

Right now they say repairs could cost around $5.6 million, but that number could rise especially if these repairs are only temporary fixes.

"Some of the work we are doing may only be a temporary work to get the pass open, and we may have to come back next spring with a bigger contract," White said.

We did reach out to several businesses in the area, most are temporarily closed, the most prominent business being the White Pass Ski Resort.

They declined to speak on camera, but told us they're unsure of how the season will play out, they're just waiting to see when they're be able to reopen.

For now White Pass remains closed indefinitely, but if you're looking for updates you can always check out the WSDOT's mobile app.
