Construction Halts at PGE Station Near Boardman

Posted: Updated:

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - Construction of a Portland General Electric generating station near Boardman stopped because the project contractor has financial problems.

The East Oregonian reports workers at the Carty Generating Station were turned away Monday, leaving the natural gas-fired power plant in limbo.

PGE hired Abeinsa to build the facility in 2013. Abeinsa is an affiliate of Abengoa, a Spanish multinational corporation that entered into early insolvency proceedings in November. The company has up to four months to make a deal with creditors.

PGE spokesman Steve Corson says the utility is in contact with Abeinsa to resolve the situation.

The Carty Generating Station is expected to come online by mid-2016. Corson said that schedule has yet to change.
