Armed Man Attempts To Steal Packages From Yakima UPS Driver

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA.- A quick thinking UPS driver in Yakima, helped police catch a man who had been following him, trying to steal the packages he delivered.

The UPS truck was parked along the 300 Block of North 4th Street, when police say an armed man walked up to the truck around 2 o'clock trying to steal packages. Unknown to the suspect though, the driver was right around back of the truck.

"I think it kind of startled the suspect, and the UPS driver was really firm in not letting him have anything even though he pulled out a gun," YPD Spokesperson, Mike Bastinelli said.

At that point police say the suspect got in his car and drove off, but not before the UPS driver got a detailed description.

"He was very detailed in the description of the suspect, the type of car he was driving, he even gave us the suspects license plate number," Bastinelli said.

The man was found later Monday afternoon, he's now in custody, but police say without the drivers bravery they may not have caught him, this type of theft isn't something they've dealt with in Yakima before.

"We've talked about that many times of people taking packages off front porches, but to my knowledge this is the first time someone has ever gone into a UPS truck," Bastinelli told us.

The police department hopes others will take away a lesson from this, learning the importance of being alert. If you're ever in a situation like this your attention to detail could be what helps them catch a criminal.
