Ski Areas Gear Up For Opening, Hopeful for Bounce Back Season

Posted: Updated:

DAYTON, WA. -- With snowfall, local ski areas are getting ready to open up. And they're hoping to remove the bad memories of a tough snow season last year.

Just in time for Christmas, the snow was really coming down at Bluewood this afternoon. That means it's time to get excited for all you skiers and snowboarders, because tomorrow Bluewood is open for business.

It may have snowed in the Tri-Cities...

"We're super stoked about this," Kim Clark, General Manager of Bluewood said.

But it was dumping inches upon inches of snow at Bluewood. And it doesn't figure to stop anytime soon.

"The forecast says we could receive anywhere from 8 to 15 inches," Clark said.

Workers were hard at work getting everything ready for skiers and snowboarders first thing in the morning.

"We're just putting the finishing touches on things," Clark told us. "The lift department is putting seat pads on, patrol is up on the mountain finishing putting out rope lines and signs."

Bluewood and other Northwest ski destinations are hoping for a bounce back season after a very disappointing one last year. And Kim says history may be on their side.

"In the 2 worst snow years that Washington has experienced in the last 50 years, (they) were followed up by two of the best snow years ever," he said. "Last year was a bummer for all of us, this year is off to a great start for everybody."

We got the chance to head up the mountain on the back of a snowmobile, strap on some skis, and try out the slopes. Man the snow sure was nice!

"It's dream snow," Clark said. "It's the kind of snow you dream about having that first run in down early in the mornings in January. It's just excellent conditions."

Friday, the real fun begins.

"It should be a great kick off, and we're looking for a lot of what we call miles of smiles," Clark said.

With hope for a lot more scenes like this still to come.

Bluewood opens up right at 9 o'clock Friday. And they've got some new incentives to get you up on the mountain, like 18% off all lift tickets. And starting in January, they're adding Wednesdays to their schedule. making them open Wednesday through Sunday each week.
