Yakima quickly becoming a hub for statewide sporting events and tourism

YAKIMA, WA.- Over the years sports tourism has grown here in the Yakima Valley, so much so that it brings in the majority of tourism revenue for the City of Yakima.

The City of Yakima has worked hard over the past several years to make the city a hub for sports tourism.

There numbers continue to rise and just last year they were able to bring in an estimated $43 million in revenue from sporting events.

Next weekend one of the cities largest events will take place, the 1A 2A State Basketball Tournament.

"Sports tourism in the Yakima Valley has really taken off," Rich Austin, the City of Yakima Sports Director said, "The estimated economic impact and the number of events have grown significantly over the last few years. In 2015 we hosted 496 events, which was a record, and it brought in an economic impact of over $43 million."

This year they'll host 32 teams, up from last year when they hosted 26 teams.

Just this one event fills close to 3,200 hotel rooms and brings in around $3.1 million in economic impact.

The state tournament begins next Thursday and runs through Sunday; they'll be playing at the Yakima Sundome.
