Law and Justice Committee and the Yakima County Clerk request for Independent Review Committee

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - An Independent Review Committee may be in the works to look into some issues between the Law and Justice Committee and the Yakima County Clerk.

Kevin Bouchey District 2 Commissioner for Yakima County, said the request to have an Independent Review Committee came up during a budget discussion. Both the Law and Justice Committee as a whole including the County Clerk requested for the committee.

If the Independent Review Committee is assembled, Bouchey said that they would look into some disagreements between the Court and the Clerk that have been on going for about 15 months, on issues regarding clerk personnel in the court room and others that have been brought forward as well.

"The clerk has indicated at this point in time that she's thinking about discontinuing that relationship," said Bouchey. "It could have a huge financial impact to the county upwards of 4 to $500,000 in duplicate personnel."

If approved this would not be the first time that an Independent Review Committee was put together, one was approved back in 2012, and Bouchey said, that it was effective in doing its job. He also says that the request for the committee will be conveyed to the other commissioners next week

It is up to the board of commissioners if they decide they want to proceed with the committee. If they do choose to proceed they will discuss the scope of what the committee might be looking at and who would be part of it.
