KENNEWICK, WA- It has been almost two months since the Kennewick Housing Authority opened Nueva Vista Apartments for low income families and people with disabilities, and the organization continues to progress the complex for the tenants.

Nueva Vista is a 32-unit apartment complex and is the first tax credit project for the Kennewick Housing Authority.  More and more families continue to move in and the project continues to make connections with the community.

"Having this project in this community in this point in time really serves a need," said Lona Hammer, Executive Director of the Kennewick Housing Authority.

Nueva Vista is located right off of Clearwater Avenue on Union Street.  There is a grocery store across the street, a school nearby, and health services close too.

50% of families there came out of homelessness.  The 32-unit complex is also home to people with disabilities.

"We really try to get them into stable housing because stable housing is the foundation of becoming more self-sufficient," said Hammer.

The first tenant moved in at the beginning of January.  Now, almost two months later, Nueva Vista has worked to make more connections with the community.  One part of the project that has progressed is the Family Self-Sufficient Program.  It is optional, but helps families set goals for the future.

"I guess to motivate them to achieve the goals they want for themselves and become self-sufficient for their families and to create a better life for their families, whether they have kids or just themselves," said Hilary Hull, Nueva Vista Service Coordinator.

The complex will also set up a computer lab and residents have access to a community garden with help from Master Gardeners.

Since Nueva Vista opened back in January, Hull has seen good things.

"It just feels very welcoming and I think it's going to be great," said Hull.

The Kennewick Housing Authority wants to build more apartments like Nueva Vista.  They own land right next to the current complex.

"We hope to do at least 21 units, possibly, a few more in the coming years," said Hammer.

The Kennewick Housing Authority is still accepting applications, but the waiting list for Nueva Vista is up to a year.  For more information, call the Kennewick Housing Authority at (509) 586-8576
