UMATILLA, OREGON- The Oregon State Police Criminal Investigative Division is looking into the death of a DOC inmate that died unexpectedly Saturday.

60-year-old Joel Abbot entered custody back in 1993 for first degree murder. He was serving a life sentence in Umatilla.

Staff transported him to a Portland area hospital this morning for off-site medical care, he died just a few hours later. It is typical protocol for investigators to look into any unexpected deaths of inmates while their in custody.
