14-year-old girl crashes car on I-82 Sunday near Prosser

OUTSIDE PROSSER, WA. -- A teenager was hurt over the weekend after crashing a car on the Interstate 82 outside Prosser.

It was near mile post 87 going East bound on Interstate 82 that a 14-year-old girl lost control of the car she was driving and went off into the median. First responders brought to the hospital for minor injuries.

Washington State Patrol is still trying to figure out how the 14-year-old got a hold of a car and why they were driving alone. WSP says the 14-year-old from Richland lost control of a 2002 Hyundai Accent after driving down a hill Sunday evening on Interstate 82 about 4 miles outside Prosser.

She crashed into the guard rail, totaling the car and came to a rest in the median. In the hospital, the girl told the troopers she crashed because she was tired.

Lieutenant Tom Foster from Washington State Patrol says this just goes to show, that you never know who you're sharing the road with.

"It was six o'clock in the evening, seven o'clock in the evening," Foster said. "Any of us could have been out there driving alongside this person who absolutely doesn't know how to drive a car yet. That's all there is to it and she went out and proved it. And we've very, very lucky that she didn't take anyone else with her."

Troopers say the girl told them she got permission to use the car from a friend, although that friend didn't own the car either. The girl claimed she'd been partying over the weekend and had been using the car for the last several days.

When she crashed Sunday, she says was on her way home to the Tri-Cities. Troopers are still investigating, but they say no drugs or alcohol were involved in the accident.

The 14-year-old girl now faces misdemeanor charges of negligent driving and driving without a license.
