USPS mail truck crashes, catches fire on SR 240 in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, WA - WSP troopers say a mail truck driver was not paying attention Monday morning when she crashed. The accident happened on State Route 240 going west bound right before the Edison exit around 10 a.m. in Kennewick.

Troopers say the woman driving the truck lost control, swerved, and ended up rolling off the side of the road where it caught on fire. First responders used fire extinguishers to put it out.

The truck was loaded with mail but none of it is damaged. The driver, thanks to some good samaritans, got out of the truck fairly quickly with no injuries.

"We were kind of wondering why all the traffic was stopped, and we saw the mail truck on its side. When we went past, we saw somebody trying to climb out of the mail truck and people running towards the truck to try to help whoever was in there," said passerby, Connie Andrews.

Troopers say the driver will be cited and she was wearing her seat belt. Traffic on SR 240 was down to one lane for a little bit but a tow truck had the scene cleared by 11 a.m.
