PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon's unemployment rate dropped to 5.1 percent for January, its lowest mark since June 2007.

The state Employment Department said Tuesday that Oregon's payroll report surged by nearly 10,000 jobs in January, and four major industries accounted for most of the gains: construction, manufacturing, leisure and hospitality, and professional and business services.

Payroll employment has risen by almost 60,000 jobs since January 2015. The jobless rate was 5.9 percent a year ago.
