The Yakima Police Department will begin their "Crime Free" Rental Housing Program in March

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA.- The Yakima Police Department is starting the first phase of its "Crime Free" Rental Housing Program this month.

It's the first step out of a three part certification to have your property certified by YPD as a crime free rental property.

The first phase will offer classes like block watch, basic crime prevention, eviction process, tenant screening, and warning signs of drug and gang activity classes.

The Police Department is partnering with the Yakima Valley Landlord Tenant Association and they say programs like these help establish safe environments in our community.

"It really gives landlords a lot of information and a lot of ways to look for criminal activity or gang activity and just really gives them a lot of knowledge," YPD Public Information Officer Mike Bastinelli told us.

The training is free for Yakima landlords and the first class begins on March 21st.

They are asking that you sign up in advance; there are only 35 spaces available.

For more information on how to sign up contact Shelly Owens at 575-6184 or by email her at
