Umatilla considers designating homeless camp

Posted: Updated:

UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) - Umatilla officials are considering opening up a designated camp for the city's homeless residents after complaints about a homeless camp along the Umatilla River.
The City Council discussed Tuesday designating a transient camping area with toilets, trash cans and fire pits to mitigate the public health threats that some residents have complained about.
The discussion comes as occupants of camps cleared out in Umatilla and Hermiston last fall have moved to a spot along the river. Their presence has generated complaints to the city and Umatilla County.
An email from a county code enforcement officer suggests authorities may have the site cleared out.
But Umatilla Mayor David Trott is calling for city, county and state representatives to come up with alternate solutions for problems surrounding homeless encampments.
