Yakima City Council decides to send additional council members on Mexico delegation trip

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA.- The Yakima City Council held a special meeting Friday morning to decide whether  to send more members to a special delegation in Morelia, Mexico.

Costs to send Mayor Avina Gutierrez on the upcoming trip were approved at the last city council meeting, but this morning she made a motion to allow for more money to also send councilwomen Carmen Mendez and Dulce Gutierrez.

According to the city a group has not gone to Morelia on a sister city delegation trip in nearly a decade.

Some council members voiced their concern that sending more people would deplete funds for their annual Washington D.C. trip, but ultimately they voted 6-1 to send the additional council members.

"The rest of the expenses once the delegation arrives in Morelia such as, lodging, meals, and transportation are all handled by the host city," Spokesperson Randy Beehler said, "That's true when delegations go to Morelia and when delegations from Morelia come here to Yakima."

The cost of flights to Morelia is just over $700. All of the money that goes towards travel comes from an account dedicated to city travel expenses.

In addition to the extra council members going, they also voted to amend the travel budget to $1,000 per council member.
