More people are heading outdoors during the Spring season - local PD offer advice to drivers and pedestrians

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WA -  Spring is here! That means blooming flowers, warmer temperatures, and more people spending time outdoors.  As the weather warms up, kids are expected to play outside, bicyclists, and motorcyclists will be hitting the road.  With the new season among us, local police officers are offering some advice to drivers and pedestrians as people traffic builds up.

This week alone, there have been at least two reports of pedestrians and car collisions.  The collisions caused minimal injuries, but police officers say these are the types of crashes, they want to avoid.

"It's our responsibility as motorists.  We need to drive safely now that the weather is turning; Winter is gone, Spring is here, Summer is coming, there is going to be more pedestrians, more bicyclists, more motorcyclists that we need to be aware of," said Sgt. Chance Belton, with Yakima Police Department.

Yakima Police also advises parents to make sure to talk to their kids, and make sure that they know to never run into the street after a stray ball or toy, or for any reason. and drivers too, put down that cell phone, to avoid any distractions.
