Stay safe swimming this summer

TRI-CITIES, WA.-- Some standouts in the realm of safety here in the Tri-Cities, want to make sure you know your "do's and dont's" of swimming safety before you set out for the summer.

Justin Lockman, of the Pasco Fire Department says you should pay attention to your basics. "If you have children just make sure to keep an eye out on your children, and just make sure to follow any safety rules around the pool... And wear lots of sunscreen!"

As we were informed by Terry Jackson, the aquatic director at the Tri-City Court Club, drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children under age five. She also made sure to note that accidents can happen, pool or no pool.

"I stress here in the Tri-Cities especially, is with all our rivers and our irrigation canals," Terry told KNDU. "If you're going to be down by the water put that life jacket on your child up in the parking lot. Don't wait til you're down by the boat, down by the water, especially if you're getting on a boat, a lot of drownings happen between the boat and the dock. That's where they just slip in while mom and dad are busy trying to get stuff onto the boat and things happen. The other thing is never go on a boat without life jackets for every single person that's on that boat."

We want you to stay safe this summer, no matter your water sport of choice! If you need further tips for water safety, you can check them out here
