Downtown Walla Walla business owners asked to be vigilant following suspicious fires

Posted: Updated:

WALLA WALLA, WA - In recent weeks, the Walla Walla Fire Department has responded to five suspicious fires downtown, including two dumpster fires and a grass fire that caused damage to the doorway of a local church.  At this time, it is unknown who may have started these fires, but they are suspected to be crimes of convenience – each location had easy access to combustible material that could be ignited with a match or lighter.

The WWFD is requesting that business owners be extra careful with cardboard and pallet storage in alleys and around dumpsters. If possible, they should not allow the accumulation of combustible material in these locations and remove and recycle it promptly. Also, they should keep lids to dumpsters closed and locked if possible.

The Walla Walla Police Department will increase downtown patrols. The WWPD’s Downtown Ambassadors will assist in monitoring, as well.
