Benton PUD may increase rates by 4.9%

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - Benton PUD had a meeting today in the auditorium to discuss the consideration of a 4.9% increase on the average monthly bill. This means a majority of residents could go from paying $108 a month to $113.

Although this increase may upset some, it's still cheaper than the median monthly bill for Northwest Utilities, which is around $121 a month.

The reason behind this rate increase is due to a raise in rates from their purchase source, which is Bonneville Power Administration.

BPA's total costs have increased about $14.7 million since just 2012.

This increase allows for funds to go towards things like aging infrastructure of dams, upgrading fish litigation, funding for fish and wildlife programs, and more.

Although this could be a slight increase for residents, Benton PUD tells us that they primarily purchase power from BPA, so when BPA's rates increase, it affects them greatly.
