Firefighters investigating burn off of I-82

Posted: Updated:

BENTON COUNTY, WA.-- Firefighters were dispatched to a fire running parallel to I-82 near exit 113 on Saturday morning. Because of dry and windy conditions, the fire was able to burn roughly 1,000 acres before it was contained. In other terms, the burn spanned about two miles long, and half-a-mile wide.

Benton County Fire District 1 and Kennewick Fire Department prepared for the possibility of home evacuations in the Canyon Lakes development. But, luckily, evacuations weren't necessary, as the firefighters were able to get the flames under control.

While the fire certainly spread due to outdoor conditions, firefighters are still trying to figure out how it started. They've ruled out a number of possibilities, like sparks from a power-line, and, to this point, believe the fire was caused by a person.
