First grade teacher saves student from choking on a quarter

RICHLAND, WA - It's no coincidence that Jason Lee Elementary's first grade theme is super heroes, because that's exactly what Shelbe Ward is. Ward is a first grade teacher who ran into a scary situation last Friday.

"I looked over and saw that her eyes went wide and she gasped for air," said Ward.

That's when she took immediate action.

"I sprinted back here as fast as I could to get to her," said Ward.

Haven Wolf is one of Shelbe's first grade students, who is lucky to be alive after accidentally swallowing a quarter in class.

"The quarter was lodged vertically up and down right at the tip of her throat," said Ward.

Ward had to do the heimlich on Haven four times. She recently trained for it, but she never thought she would have to use it in real life.

"I actually recently just got trained last year in that so I was glad that I did get trained," said Ward.

Even though Ward doesn't feel like a super hero, Haven's mom says she's lucky to have had such a brave teacher save her daughter's life.
