Family escapes house fire after neighbor wakes them up

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA-  The Yakima Fire Department responded to the 800 Block South 50th Avenue just before midnight on February 10.

The initial responding fire crews found a single story home, with over half of it, engulfed in flames. The garage area had collapsed just shortly after the first crews attacked the fire.

A neighbor near the home, noticed a column of fire coming from the garage area on the north side of the house. He then went to the home to wake up the family inside. Two adults were in the basement and the four children were in the main floor bedrooms.

All occupants were able to get out safely, but the children had to jump through their bedroom windows to avoid the flames.

The six family members were all taken to Yakima Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.

Fire crews say there's about $100,000 in damages and the family dog was lost in the fire.
