8-year-old rescued after being pinned under SUV for an hour

RICHLAND, WA - An 8-year-old boy is at a Seattle hospital after he was trapped under an SUV this morning. It happened around 8:00 a.m. in Richland, and crews from multiple agencies were called out to help.

It happened on the 1000 block of Allenwhite Road. Reporter Jaclyn Selesky spoke to the boy's mom, Jessica Ren, who told her that Ren's older son was backing the SUV down their very steep driveway, when it started to slide because it was so icy, taking the 8-year-old boy with it. The sliding SUV took him down the driveway, over a curb, down the hill and then pinned his leg on some rocks. It was about an hour until crews finally were able to get him out.

"It became a little bit more of a technical type rescue, trying to limit the injuries that the kid suffered while getting the SUV off of the child's leg," said Curtis Walsh, Richland Fire Department Battalion Chief.

Batallion Chief Walsh also told us that they practice stabilizing cars and rescue techniques frequently, but today's icy road conditions made it extremely challenging for them. Crews had to anchor the SUV to a neighbor's house as well as a Suburban in the family's garage. They were then able to lift the SUV just enough to release the boy's leg and get him out.

The boy's mom told us she was able to talk to her son while he was stuck to keep him calm. He was initially taken to Trios in an ambulance, but has since been transported to Seattle. There's no word yet on the extent of his injuries.
