Outside threat puts Washington Elementary on lock down Friday morning

UPDATE: PENDLETON, OR – At approximately 7:40 a.m. Friday morning, two Washington students reported seeing a man with firearm on the levy several blocks south of the elementary school. Police were notified and Washington Elementary immediately went into Lock Down. School buses were diverted away from Washington and, per District protocol, all other Pendleton Schools were placed on Lock Out.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. police made contact with the man reported by students and notified the district that they could return to normal operations. All schools were back to their regular schedule by 8:20 a.m.

“While it is frustrating to have a lock out two days in a row, I am pleased with the professionalism shown by the Pendleton School District staff and law enforcement. I completely support Principals Greenough and Van Nice for acting quickly and decisively. I would also thank Police Chief Roberts for the quick response to both incidents,” reports Pendleton Superintendent, Andy Kovach.

Lock Out differs from a Lock Down in that classes go on as normal, but building entrances are secured and nobody is allowed to enter or leave the campus.
