How Wags To Riches gives back to the pet-loving community

YAKIMA, WA - Wags To Riches is a non-profit organization in Yakima that cares for abandoned cats and dogs.

"We rehabilitate these dogs, we get them vet care, and we find a perfect match for the dog with a family," said Ellen Peterson, coordinator at Wags To Riches.

Their goal has been the same since they opened in 2008: find a home for stray cats and dogs who come through their door. They also offer a spay and neuter program.

"Trying to get the population down is huge," said Peterson. "Spay and neuter, we're just really big on that."

They help over 100 seniors each year through their senior pet companion program, which pays for their pets' vet bills.

"It can be something from a vaccination or spay and neuter to involving a surgery," Peterson said.

Then there's the We Will, We Promise program, an option given to seniors who worry about their pet if they themselves pass away.

"It provides the peace of mind for knowing that your pet is going somewhere safe," said Peterson. "They're not going to be abandoned, euthanized, or going someplace where they are unwanted."

Grants and fundraisers help Wags To Riches provide these services, but it is still not enough.

They need continuing support through donations and volunteering.
