Mid-Columbia Partnership teacher named Secondary Educator of the Year

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA – Julie Rheinschmidt, who teaches middle school math and science at Mid-Columbia Partnership (MCP), was named Secondary Educator of the Year by the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives (WALA).

Rheinschmidt received the award during WALA’s annual conference in Chelan. The award recognizes middle and high school teachers and staff members in alternative learning programs who stand out for their contributions and service to educating students and helping make their school or program be successful.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the amazing group of teachers who are involved in alternative education,” Rheinschmidt says. “We all just want to connect with kids, find what motivates them and help them learn in ways that best suit them.”

MCP is the Kennewick School District’s parent-partnership program. It provides quality educational opportunities and resources for students in kindergarten through 12th grade whose education is largely guided and provided by their parents.

Rheinschmidt began teaching in the program 13 years ago after enrolling her own children in MCP. She currently teaches Pre-algebra, Middle School Science, and Microrobotics along with a project-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) course. She recently received a nearly $1,000 grant to pay for resources so she can teach coding and other skills to her students.

“Julie provides engaging learning opportunities for her students, works with our families to help them better educate their children at home, provides exceptional guidance and encouragement to other MCP staff and works tirelessly to improve her craft and bring new resources to her classroom,” says Principal Carrie DeForest. “She exemplifies the spirit of the Secondary Teacher of the Year Award with her leadership, dedication to student success and passion to grow.”
