Blue Mountain Community College building new workforce training center

BOARDMAN, OR - Boardman, Oregon is booming economically, with some local employers saying they've seen exponential growth. It's one of the reasons why Blue Mountain Community College is building a new workforce training center right next to the SAGE center. Reporter Jaclyn Selesky caught up with a teacher to find out why this new addition is so important to the community.

BCMM is getting ready to start classes at their brand new workforce training center in April. One of the programs that will be housed in the new building is the industrial systems technology program. It's a two year program that offers classes such as energy production or food processing, two huge industries in our region. According to Jerry McMichael, an instructor with Blue Mountain Community College, the last industrial program was offered almost 15 years ago, and there hasn't been this kind of training locally since then.

"We want to give people an opportunity to move into a career path without having to move away somewhere to get their training, or feel like they need to go to Seattle or Portland to a big city, but they can stay here," said McMichael.

Promoting local employment and local living is one of their biggest goals. Jerry told Jaclyn Selesky that most of the people in these industries, who have the specialized training needed, are there's a huge gap that needs to be filled.

Spring classes are expected to start April 1st.
