One dead after early morning house fire in East Valley

EAST VALLEY, WA - Fire investigators in East Valley are working to find out the cause of an early morning house fire, and tragically, someone living in the home was killed.

East Valley Fire confirms that the victim was a woman in her 50s, and that the home did have working fire alarms.

A Lieutenant at the scene told reporter Veronica Padilla that the woman was trapped. A man was also inside at the time, but he was able to get out safely. He was then taken to the hospital and evaluated.

The fire sparked just before 6:00 a.m. this morning inside a house on Birchfield Road, just north of SR 24. When firefighters got to the scene, the home was engulfed in flames and full of smoke. Crews were able to put out the fire effectively, but earlier this afternoon they were called back out to put out several hot spots investigators found.

An autopsy will be performed to determine exactly how the victim died.

What caused the fire is still under investigation.
