Overflowing irrigation ditch floods homes in Wiley City

AHTANUM, WA - Floods are hitting many homes in Wiley City along S. Wiley Road, including Patricia Sage's.

"At 1 o' clock, my alarm went off so we could go check it," said Sage, "and by that time we already had water in the yard all the way up to the house, and since then it has gotten deeper."

Sage, who has lived at her current residence for six years, says water overflowed an irrigation ditch near homes, flooding the road.

"It's an irrigation ditch, and this is what I'm flooded from, and this could have been better if they would consider putting in a bigger pipe," said Sage.

Leaving residents to take matters into their own hands, by cleaning drains and ditches along their properties.

"There is only one thing you can do: pull your boot straps up, put one foot in front of the other and start over, or do what has to be done," said Sage.

But there is only so much she can do, and for Sage, the idea of leaving is harder than staying.

"Leaving is really hard because I've got two dogs and two cats, and I can not leave them behind," Sage said.

Earlier today, the City of Yakima declared a state of emergency, and they hope that the county follows their lead.
