Gesa Credit Union contributes funds & special gift to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital

SEATAC, WA - Continuing a rich tradition of fundraising for hospitalized children, Richland-based Gesa Credit Union made a special contribution of $7,200 to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital this week.

The money was raised last fall during the Northwest Credit Union Association's (NWCUA) Hollywood Glamour gala and auction--a seminal Credit Unions for Kids event directly benefiting six Children's Miracle Network (CMN) hospitals in the Northwest. Gesa Credit Union is a member of the NWCUA. All funds contributed by credit unions are donated to the CMN hospital in their area.

In addition to a check, Gesa presented an American Girl doll. The doll was custom-designed without hair to provide comfort to a young girl undergoing treatments that may result in her own hair loss. Once the patient is well again, the doll can be sent to American Girl's "hospital" to have hair added so the doll resembles her patient-friend.

The Credit Unions for Kids charity was born in 1986 when a group of Northwest credit unions began raising money for regional CMN hospitals. Their model was adopted nationally a decade later and now is the "charity of choice" for the entire credit union movement. Yakima and Tri-cities area credit unions have raised more than $75,000 for Yakima Valley Memorial in the past decade. These funds help not only to purchase medical equipment and to support life-saving research, they also directly comfort families of patients.

"Because of the financial difficulties people experience as the result of unplanned medical expenses, we feel there is direct link between physical and financial health," noted Don Miller, President and CEO of Gesa Credit Union. "We realize the importance of supporting the Yakima Memorial Foundation through the Credit Unions for Kids program."
