Only in Washington: Pepp'rmint Stick Drive-In

UNION GAP, WA - We continue our coverage of the 12 Unsuspecting restaurants in our state with food so good it should be illegal, according to onlyinyourstate.com.

This time we're heading to Union Gap, where reporter Veronica Padilla got a chance to visit a family business that serves up one of her favorites: some good old-fashioned burgers.

Walk into Pepp'rmint Stick Drive-In, and step back into the 50s. This nostalgic drive-in on Main Street in Union Gap has stood the test of time, and success for a business that's been open since 1948 doesn't come easy.

"It's pretty nice," said the owner, Dave Butler. "It's self-rewarding that we worked so hard to get something that people seem to like and still keep coming back for."

Everywhere you look reminds you of peppermint. Go through the drive-thru? You'll see the red and white candy-striped roof. Go inside? It's on the floor, tables, and the tops of the windows. It even comes on the paper that their big burgers are served on.

"We are the only ones that have the big half-pound burger," said Pepp'rmint Stick Drive-In's other owner, Kaylynn Thysell. "Our competitors just have the third-pound burger. So it's really popular here."

Burgers are not the only great thing about the menu: there's fourteen different milkshake flavors, the signature hard peppermint ice cream, and the extremely popular "Colossal Crisp Fries" and homemade fry sauce.

And it's food like this that keeps people coming back for more.

"The food's really good," said customer Alek Torrez. "The shakes are really delicious, I love their shakes. Strawberry banana's the best. The scenery is awesome, I like how the feel is. Yeah, it's a really great place to come."

Not everything about Pepp'rmint Stick is old-fashioned. You can order online, and there's an app on the Google Play and Apple App stores. But word of mouth is why Pepp'rmint Stick Drive-In has food so good it should be illegal.
