Keeping you and your pets happy, healthy this spring

Posted: Updated:

Spring is in the air, and if you're anything like our anchor Tracci Dial and her dog Aussie, you've already started hitting up the trails.

But experts say there are things you should keep in mind.

"We have these wonderful inventions here where you can put the water in that water bottle, tip it up and create a bowl for your pet and your pet can drink out of that," said Petsmart Manager, Patrick McKennon

So how much water should you bring?  It might be more than you think.

"Something like this would probably be used for a two mile hike for a dog about Captain's size," he said.

Another big thing to keep in mind?  The unwelcome critters your dog could bring home.

"With the weather warming up, we're going to see an increase of fleas and ticks in the area, and you always, always, always want to have some kind of protection on your dog," he said.

And it's not just about keeping your dogs healthy, there are plenty of options to make the hike easier on you.

"It's nice to take the load off of you so sometimes pets will have a backpack so that they can carry their own stuff.  "

And keep you from racking up a hefty fine.

"If your dog gets caught pooping on the trail you can get a $250 fine, so it's always good to carry poop bags with you so you can clean up after your dog and it's really bad for the environment anyway so it's good to clean up after your dog. "
