Local eating disorder program accepting clients

KENNEWICK, WA - From outside the Recovery and Wellness Center of Eastern Washington, it may not seem like a typical health care facility. This is because it looks like any other house in the neighborhood.

Katie Klute of the Recovery and Wellness Center says she spent a lot of time finding a place where clients would feel comfortable.

"I wanted to make sure that we selected a location that made them feel warm, welcome, and safe," said Klute. "So we chose to select more of a house setting rather than a commercial building."

The idea of creating an eating disorder program comes from personal experience for Klute. She had to deal with anorexia for years, but after therapy and treatment, she was able to recover.

"I wish that when I was going through my personal eating disorder that I had something like this, because there's so much that a person can do with an individual therapist and individual dietitian," Klute explained, "but it really ups the game and allows the person to have a more intensive treatment when you can come to a program similar to ours."

The program started this month and runs five days a week. Right now, it's limited to women 18 years or older. The program is open to anyone with or without insurance.

"The program itself is a seven-week program minimum, sometimes we will have individuals that need extended care and we'll extend their treatment. They are with us five days a week and stay for a few hours," said Klute.

As for the future, Klute says they hope to keep growing and to continue to bring on additional therapists so that they can increase the number of people that they see at one time, and also add a program for teens.
