Northwest Harvest celebrates 50th anniversary

YAKIMA, WA - It's a special night in Yakima for Northwest Harvest. The organization is celebrating their 50th anniversary.

In 1967 they were a social justice, they're the leader in the state on the fight against hunger.

Northwest Harvest works with 375 other organizations to distribute a lot of food. Last year, 33 million pounds was handed out, and that includes about 6 million just in Yakima.

Believe it or not, you don't have to make a big donation to make a difference. In order to provide just one nutritious meal to a family of three, it only costs 67 cents!

Two thirds of the food Northwest Harvest distributes is fruits and vegetables, and while it is fantastic that people are in the giving spirit during the holidays, that's not the most crucial time that families need help.

"The most impactful time would be during the summer because that's the time when people are not thinking about people in need," said Shelley Rotondo, CEO of Northwest Harvest. "It is a critical time. School meals are not available to kids, daycare costs go up, our pantries are low. Hunger is every single day of the year."

Northwest Harvest is always looking for volunteers; just go to and click on "volunteer" to sign up.

They really need your help. So far this year, volunteers have packed enough food to provide meals for more than 17,000 families of three.
