Dial-A-Ride bus tips over in bus vs. car accident in Richland

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, WA - Richland Police officers were called out to the scene of a car versus bus accident earlier today. Reporter Kristina Shalhoup was on scene not long after it happened at the intersection of Swift Boulevard and Thayer Drive, and saw that both vehicles were in pretty bad shape.

From what officers told her, the driver of the SUV involved sped through a red light, hitting a Dial-A-Ride bus that was turning from Swift onto Thayer, and the impact was so hard that the bus actually hit the curb and tipped over onto its side.

The intersection was blocked off for about half an hour while crews cleaned up and took care of the people involved. In the SUV there was just one man, the driver, who was taken to Kadlec with minor injuries that officers think were due to the car's airbags deploying. In the bus, there was just the driver, who was alright, and one passenger as well.

"A 21-year-old passenger inside...one of our officers actually had to cut her out of her seatbelt," explained Captain Mike Cobb with RPD. "She was transported to Kadlec to see if she had any injuries."

While on the scene, Kristina Shalhoup also spoke with a witness, who didn't want to talk on camera, but told her that after running to check on all the people involved in the accident, he actually helped the police officer get the woman out of the bus. He said that she seemed physically alright, but was definitely shaken up.

The driver of the red SUV has been deemed at fault. Right now, however, all charges are pending.
