PNNL welcomes WSU interns as part of new program

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, WA - This fall, 12 WSU Pullman doctoral students will begin long-term internships at PNNL as part of a new program between the university and the lab. Reporter Rex Carlin learned more about the program, and that the studies of the first group of 12 students focus on a variety of topics, but all relate directly to areas of work at PNNL.

Representatives at PNNL say the opportunity for these students is a first class experience working in a national laboratory...experience the vast majority of students never get the opportunity to have.

"Energy, environmental sustainability, national security, fundamental science," said Suresh Baskaran, director for Research Partnerships. "And it gives the students - very creative and talented students - the opportunity to work in the lab along with the scientists and get a very valuable experience."

Baskaran says the experience is one that these students can take advantage of to propel their careers in their various fields of interest once they graduate with their doctorate degrees.

The students selected will work at PNNL for two years as part of their doctoral studies and thesis work.
