Former Sunnyside Financial Clerk Facing Criminal Charges

Posted: Updated:

A former city employee from Sunnyside is facing charges after police say she stole thousands of dollars from taxpayers.

Investigators believe that Guillermina Chavez took nearly $18,000 during her time as a finance clerk for the city of Sunnyside.

Detectives say Chavez took the money for two years from January 2013 to December 2014.

Now, she's facing first degree theft charges.

Chavez was caught after Sunnyside's City Manager contacted the Washington State Auditors Office about a bank deposit that was missing more than $2,000. The audit revealed that Chavez would take cash payments from residents for their utility bills, hand them receipts, but then void the transaction a short time later. She would then keep the cash.

Chavez was arrested on Wednesday and refused to give a statement to police.
