One dead in house fire south of Toppenish

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA COUNTY, WA - Yakima County Firefighters say one person died in a house fire a few miles south of Toppenish Thursday night.

Crews were called to 59302 U.S. 97 around 8:15 p.m. and found fire coming from the roof and bedroom in the back corner of the house.

Firefighters say part of the roof and ceiling has already collapsed.

They were not able to find anyone on the first sweep of the home, but later found a body in the back bedroom after getting a better handle on the fire.

Crews say they had a hard time getting the fire out because of a void space between the roofing of the attic. Large sections of ceiling had to be removed and the fire was finally put out about 2 hours later.

The investigation has been turned over to Yakima County Sheriff's Detectives and the Yakima County Fire Marshal. No word what started the fire, but the home is a total loss.

The name of the deceased has not been released. No firefighters were injured while working this fire.
