West Richland police now carrying Narcan

WEST RICHLAND, WA - After a federal drug investigation involving the very dangerous drug fentanyl, DEA agents say it's a growing problem in the Tri-Cities. They've seen a spike of fentanyl-laced products in the area over the last six months.

These drugs are so dangerous because they can be up to 50 times more powerful than heroin and are causing an increase in overdose deaths.

West Richland officers are the latest department now carrying Narcan, a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose almost instantly.

Officers say they feel safer carrying Narcan because there's always the chance that they'll run into a drug like fentanyl out in the field... and since exposure from that drug can be deadly, they want to be able to protect themselves as well as citizens.

Officers also want to emphasize to the public that they should not be afraid to call 9-1-1 if they witness an overdose.

The Good Samaritan Law provides those calling for help immunity from arrest or any possible charges.
