Milepost 22 fire 50 percent contained

Posted: Updated:

VANTAGE, WA - The Milepost Twenty Two Fire is burning in brush and grass near Vantage, Washington just west of the Columbia River.

The fire has burned 7,280 acres and is about 50 percent contained.

Yesterday, an influx of additional firefighters and equipment arriving through the day was productively engaged in establishing containment lines around the fire.  Helicopters and small air tankers dropped water on hot spots, while ground forces burned out along existing roads and newly constructed dozer and hand line.  By evening, only a small section of initial line remained to be completed in the northeast sector of the fire.  Fire managers were very pleased with the excellent progress.  They cited the good foundation provided by the initial attack forces and the timely arrival of reinforcements.

Today; while some growth did occur yesterday, today’s acreage increase is primarily attributable to more accurate mapping.  The night shift reported that all exterior fire perimeters established yesterday held.  Completion of the last section of containment line and securing the remainder of the perimeter will be the focus for today.  Firefighters will be working inward a sufficient distance from the perimeter to extinguish any remaining hotspots that could allow the fire to escape.  Current plans call for completing this work by the end of shift on Saturday.  Consequently, the resources assigned to this incident will begin decreasing later today with full demobilization anticipated by Sunday morning.
