Vegetation fire causes nine cars to catch fire

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND- A 15 acre fire shut down areas of Highway 240 Sunday and damaged multiple cars.

Richland, West Richland, Hanford, and Benton County Fire District 1 responded to the flames off Stevens and Saint Street near the railroad tracks.

The blaze started around 11:30 a.m. and spread quickly thanks to the surrounding tumbleweeds. Richland Battalion Chief Brenda Rodgers said the tumbleweeds are what caused nine cars to catch fire.

Rodgers said this is a good time to look at your home and create a "defensible space" around it. That means getting rid of any dry brush, dead leaves, or anything that can help a fire spread.

The exact cause of the fire is unknown but Rodgers said it looks like the train going by is what sparked it.
