L Road Fire temporarily closes SR 243 and SR 24

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA - Another big fire burning near the Vernita Bridge in Grant County is now at nearly 30,000 acres.

The L Road Fire started yesterday afternoon. Right now, SR 243 is back open in both directions near the bridge, and SR 24 is also open in both directions, from the junction with SR 240 to County Road 24 after Washington State Patrol along with the Department of Transportation closed them.

Starting Thursday afternoon and less than 10 miles from the Vernita Bridge, Benton County Fire Protection District 2 now says the fire is 40 percent contained.

Right now, the Department of Natural Resources says the fire is mainly grass and brush. 67 firefighters are currently working on the flames, which they believe was human caused.

They expected to have the fire fully contained by the end of the night. Luckily, the burning area is far from any homes, and so far, there have been no injuries.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) - Oregon officials are proposing a new framework for managing wolves that prey on livestock.    The East Oregonian reports that a possible deal emerged Tuesday that involves ranchers making clearly defined efforts to protect livestock and ward off wolves with non-lethal deterrents.    If ranchers follow those rules and still lose livestock to wolves, and the wolves meet the state's definition of "chronic depredation," ranchers can ask...More >>
