Work underway on new sidewalks in east Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, WA - The City of Yakima is installing new sidewalks just in time for the start of a new school year.

“Improving sidewalks in neighborhoods and keeping Yakima children safe are certainly priorities of the Yakima City Council,” said Assistant Mayor Dulce Gutierrez, who chairs the Council’s Public Safety Committee. “Results from partnerships with local schools are starting to show in Yakima neighborhoods.”

Work is currently underway on sidewalks around East Yakima schools and neighborhoods in Council District 2 near Adams Elementary School and Washington Middle School. The project includes ramps that are compliant with the American Disabilities Act (ADA). The $357,000 project is expected to wrap up before Yakima schools begin classes later this month.

The new sidewalks are part of Safe Routes to Schools projects that will continue in 2019 with plans for areas in Council District 1 around Garfield Elementary School and also in Council District 3 in the area around McClure Elementary School. The work next year in those areas will include not only new sidewalks, but ramps, signs and signals on several streets in the neighborhoods surrounding those schools. They should be completed before the 2019-2020 school year begins.

Previous Safe Routes to School projects have also helped improve the signals and sidewalks around West Valley Middle School and West Valley Junior High School.

KENNEWICK: Good news for all of you bargain shoppers out there, Goodwill is opening a brand new store in Kennewick sometime next year. Thanks to a 3.1 million dollar loan and lots of planning, a very large patch of dirt will be home to a 20,000 square foot Goodwill; half warehouse and processing, half retail. The Kennewick store will be closing, however. You can still say, out with your old couches, TV's and clothing, and *into someone else's hands, just at a different location. ...More >>
