Whooshh's Salmon Cannon at 2018 River Fest

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, WA-The River Festival 2018 was held Saturday at Columbia Park. There were tons of kids and families enjoying all the activities and events. The River Festival is a fun educational event that promoted the benefits of the rivers and the hydro-systems.

The festival showcases all the different benefits and uses of our rivers including power generation through dams and how river based water makes our economy possible.

Kids has the chance to participate in recreation such as paddle boarding, kayaking, and how to navigate a salmon habitat. Vendors and exhibits from all different organizations around the Tri-Cities were also featured.

Including one company called Whooshh, which invented the salmon cannon. This cannon sends salmon up and over damns quickly so that can spawn. This cannon is able to launch the fish and get them over the dam in about 57 seconds.

Whooshh invented them cannon in efforts to help protect and save the salmon across our region.

"It's easy on the fish. We can move multiple species of fish safer, faster, gentler, and easier," Senior Vice President of Sales and Support, Tom Shearer said. "We have more energy to get up near the spawning grounds to be able to spawn and to also be able to protect the reds after they spawn."

Whooshh debuted the cannon in 2015. They have three mobile systems and one permanent system, but the company is working on installing more.
