Friday lightening strike keeps Kittitas firefighters busy through the weekend

Posted: Updated:

KITTITAS COUNTY: It's been an all hands on deck weekend for Kittitas firefighters. The lightening storm that passed through Kittitas County Friday evening started two fires near Blewett Pass and they're still burning.

Saturday evening, the Type 3 Incident Management Team set up at the Kittitas Valley Event Center in Ellensburg for both the Iron East and Iron West burning near Blewett pass. The East fire is currently about 20 acres and the West fire is about 5 acres.

Level 2 evacuations are in place for all homes half a mile North of the fire. Three engines are posted up where the level 2 evacuations are in place.

As of Sunday morning nearly 170 firefighters are called into fight this fire, that includes engines from Ellensburg and Leavenworth. There are currently several structures in Chelan County that could potentially be threatened depending on where the fire moves.

The Southeast Washington Interagency Incident Management Team say, "Hand crews are establishing a fire line around each fire, with dozers and engines assisting on the less steep eastern portion of the fire."

The Washington Department of Transportation will be closing Highway 97 for a week to install culverts. All hikers are being cleared out by forest staff.
