4th fatal collision from stop sign ignorance; YCSO deputies investigating

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA COUNTY, WA - One person is dead after a two-vehicle collision Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Independence Road and Scoon Road.

According to the Yakima County Sheriff's Office, the first car was northbound on Scoon Rd. and had failed to stop at the stop sign, t-boning the second car, which had been eastbound on Independence Road.

The first car struck the passenger door area of the second car, where the passenger of the second car had been sitting.

The force of the impact forced both vehicles off of the roadway at the northeast corner of the intersection. Sheriffs say the passenger, who died, is believed to have been killed on impact.

Drugs or alcohol don't appear to be factors. All people involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

The collision is under investigation by the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division and the Washington State Patrol. After the investigation is finished, charges, if any, will be determined and forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office.

This is the fourth fatal collision occurring in the Yakima Lower Valley area in the past few weeks involving two vehicles where one of the causing drivers had failed to stop at a stop sign.

This is a strong reminder that motorists need to pay attention to the traffic laws, stops signs, speed limits, cell phone use/distracted driving, etc. to avoid becoming the causing driver or victim in a motor vehicle collision, YCSO says.
