Benton-Franklin Health District hosts youth suicide prevention summit

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK: it's a sad reality, but in the last year the Tri-Cities community has lost 25 people to suicide. Local health experts are trying to get a handle on this problem.

12 of those 25 people who died from suicide were kids and young adults between the ages of 10 and 24.

That's why a room full of medical clinicians, local organizations and school nurses join together to talk suicide prevention at a summit Tuesday morning.

Local health experts we talked to say young people committing or attempting suicide are acting out of impulse, because the ages 10 to 24 are when the brain is still developing.

During today's summit local health experts review current resources and programs in our community and then work to identify any gaps between them.

"The gaps that we addressed pretty heavily today had a lot to do with consistent services, funding for intervention and post-prevention services," said Carla Prock with the Benton-Franklin Health District. "Those are the primary things we talked about: Access to mental health services and having those services available where youth are at."

At the end of the seminar, participants filled out a survey- which will help Carla and other suicide prevention advocates determine a tangible plan for filling the gaps in our community

Carla also says today's seminar acknowledges what other organizations are already doing and hope to increase those resources; whether that be through funding them, expanding them or working together with them.
