Construction update for I-90 on Snoqualmie Pass

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WA - Driving to Seattle on I-90 through Snoqualmie Pass can be a struggle, with construction every where, lanes being closed and even animals coming down on to the road.

The new I-90 eastbound lanes and wildlife crossings are coming very soon.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)  and Conservation Northwest have been working on phase two of construction.
This phase includes monitoring wildlife using the new crossings, w
hich are meant to help animals get safely across the roadways and making it safer for drivers, with fewer wildlife to watch out for.

" We thought it made sense to make sure to beside addressing the rode way elements we addressed the wildlife issues, because it's a safety issue.Wildlife crossing the road way is not goodit can lead to fatalities ," said Brain White ,Assistant Regional Administrator for WDSOT.

According to Jennifer Watkins, Conservation Northwest coordination for I-90, this project has been in the works since 2004.

She explained that studies show wildlife crossings reduce accidents by 80 percent between wildlife and vehicles.

As far as the new driving lanes,  those should be open in the next couple of weeks.
