Perry Tech takes part in Student Voter Registration Challenge

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA,WA - Perry Tech is taking part in Governor Inslee's first ever Student Voter Registration Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to register as many students as possible before the election. Perry Tech is one in 34 schools statewide that has joined in on this. According to the U.S. Census, young adult voters aged 18-29 make up the smallest percentage of voter turnout, 46.1%.

"It helps people to understand how to register because a lot of people don't even know where to start," says Perry Tech student Hunter Chace. If the technical college wins the challenge, the school will be invited to Olympia for lunch at the governor's executive residence and will be recognized on his social media. School officials tell me the goal of this challenge isn't necessarily to win, but to get student's voice heard and get more young adults registered. Out of almost 800 students, the school has registered close to 60 faculty, staff and students.

Timeline:

Sept. 25 – National Voter Registration Day

Oct. 8 – Deadline for online/mail-in voter registration, or voter information updates, for the Nov. 6 election

Oct. 29 – Deadline for in-person new Washington state voter registration for the Nov. 6 election

Nov. 6 – Election Day

Nov. 30 – Winning schools announced
